How to Help Kids Create an Anime Hero of Their Own

Read the story

Kids can love an anime hero's bold look, but the best part of creating their own hero is deciding what matters to that character.

Take a blank page and divide it into four spaces: face, goal, helper, and challenge. A few lines or words in each space are enough. This is a creative invitation, not a drawing contest.

Give the hero a goal

What does your hero want to do today? Maybe they need to find a missing friend, protect a garden, or learn a skill. A clear goal gives the story somewhere to go.

Choose a strength beyond a superpower

The hero might run fast or control light. They might also listen carefully, notice clues, make people laugh, or keep trying after a mistake. Ask your child which strength will actually help when things get difficult.

Add a helper

Every story gets richer when another character has a point of view. Is the helper a friend, sibling, talking animal, or reluctant rival? What can that person do that the hero cannot?

Draw three expressions

Try excited, uncertain, and determined. The face changes while the character stays the same. Even stick figures work. Now your child has the beginning of a scene: What made the hero feel each way?

Finish by asking your child to tell the story aloud in three parts: “At first… Then… Finally…” Write down their words if they'd like to keep them. Let them change the ending tomorrow.
