Five Inventor Questions Kids Can Ask About Anything

Read the story

Ever watched a child turn a box into a spaceship? That is the beginning of an inventor's mindset: noticing what something could become.

You don't need a workshop to encourage it. Pick an everyday object—a paper cup, a shoebox, or a spoon—and ask these five questions together.

1. What does it already do?

Start with observation. A box holds things. It also has sides, corners, a lid, and a lot of empty space. Ask your child to point out three details you might have missed.

2. Who could it help?

Inventing gets more interesting when someone has a problem to solve. Could that box help a toy travel safely? Could it organize crayons for a younger sibling? Let the child choose the person and the need.

3. What would you change?

Offer paper, tape, and a pencil. A window, handle, divider, or label might be enough to transform the object. A drawing counts as a first version; nobody has to build a finished product today.

4. What happened when you tried it?

If the toy falls out, you've learned something about the design. Ask, “What would you try next?” Keep the focus on testing an idea, not grading the inventor.

5. What would you call it?

Naming the invention invites a story. Who uses it? Where does it live? What is version two going to do?

For a quick family or classroom challenge, give everyone the same object and ten minutes. Share the ideas afterward. Different answers are the fun part.
