Preparing them for the world without rushing them out of childhood
I’ve been thinking about how delicate the line is for Black parents.
We know the world can be unfair. We know preparation matters. We understand the responsibility of equipping our children with awareness, resilience, and self-protection.
But there is a window — a sacred one — where childhood should not be rushed into adulthood.
Softness does not mean unprepared. Laughter does not mean unaware. Imagination does not mean incapable.
Sometimes, in our effort to shield them from what we know is coming, we unintentionally shorten the season where they are allowed to be light.
And I understand why. Our history here has not afforded us the luxury of naivety. Many of us grew up learning lessons early. Too early.
But preparation and protection are not the same as pressure.
A child who is allowed to be soft learns something powerful: I am safe before I am strong.
That safety becomes the foundation for confidence. When kids are permitted to feel deeply, to imagine freely, to move without constant correction, they build self-trust.

We can prepare our children for the world. And we can protect the part of them that still needs to be children.
Those two truths can exist at the same time.
The goal isn’t to delay growth. It’s to let growth unfold without stealing softness too soon.
Black children do not need to harden early to become capable. They need roots before armor.
