Make a Family Treasure Map With Your Child

Read the story

When we talk about a child's legacy, we might think of famous names and long histories. But a child's own world is already full of meaningful places: the chair where someone reads to them, the kitchen where a favorite meal appears, or the park where they learned something new.

Invite your child to make a treasure map of the places and people who help them feel at home. You need paper and something to draw with. There is no need to share private addresses or personal details.

Draw the center

Ask your child where the map should begin. It might start with a home, a classroom, a grandparent's table, or a favorite library. Draw a symbol rather than a detailed floor plan.

Add three treasures

What moments would your child put on the map? A bedtime story can be a book symbol. A song can be a music note. A friend can be represented by a color or a simple drawing. Let the child explain what each treasure means.

Draw the path

Connect the symbols with a winding line. Where would your child travel first? Who might join them? The route can be imaginary even if the memories are real.

Invite a story

Ask, “Which treasure would you show somebody who has never been here?” Then listen. An older child might write a sentence beside each drawing; a younger child might narrate while you write their words.

The map can grow over time. Leave space for a new memory next month. A child can choose which stories belong on the page and which they want to keep private.
